CIArb-NAB’s Ask the Arbitrator series is proud to present an interview with International Arbitrator Harrie Samaras, FCIArb.

Ms. Samaras is a seasoned, full-time neutral professional specializing in alternative dispute resolution (ADR), with a particular focus on intellectual property, technology, and business disputes. Throughout her career, she has effectively served as an arbitrator, mediator, and expert determiner in numerous domestic and international cases, covering a wide spectrum of contractual agreements, industries, and technologies.

Prior to her career in ADR, Ms. Samaras spent 24 years as an attorney in the private, corporate and government sectors, encompassing roles in law firms, the U.S. government, and multinational corporations. Her professional journey has included leadership positions within various ADR and professional organizations. Additionally, she has made substantial contributions to the field of ADR through her prolific writing and speaking engagements, having edited and co-authored several books, chapters and articles.  In 2019, Ms. Samaras was awarded the Sir Francis Bacon Dispute Resolution Award by the ADR Committee of the Pennsylvania Bar Association for her contributions to the mediation field in Pennsylvania.

Ms. Samaras’ impressive educational background includes B.S. and M.S. degrees in the life sciences, a J.D. degree, and an LL.M. degree in Patent and Trade Regulation Law. Her qualifications include certifications from the International Mediation Institute, and she is a fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. Her vast experience and expertise in ADR and intellectual property matters have earned her recognition and respect in her field.

Ms. Cariana Jones, a Juris Doctor (J.D.) candidate at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, will interview Ms. Samaras to gain insights into her professional journey.

Bios

Harrie Samaras Esq., FCIArb, is a full-time neutral in her own ADR practice. She has been mediating and arbitrating commercial cases (U.S. and international) for over 20 years, focusing on intellectual property, technology and business disputes.  She is a Fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the College of Commercial Arbitrators.

During her legal career, Harrie has worked as an attorney in the corporate and private sectors, as a staff attorney and law clerk at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and as a Patent Examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (Department of Commerce).

Harrie has held a variety of leadership roles in professional organizations, including serving as the Chair of the ABA Section of Dispute Resolution, as a member of the Executive Committee of the College of Commercial Arbitrators, and as a board member on the Board of the American Intellectual Property Law Association.

She is a frequent speaker on ADR topics and has published in the area including as the editor and an author of the book ADR Advocacy, Strategies, and Practices for Intellectual Property and Technology Cases, Second Edition (ABA publishing) and as the author of a chapter on selecting arbitrators in the book Arbitrating Commercial Disputes in the United States (Practicing Law Institute).  For more information see https://www.harriesamaras.com.

Cariana M. Jones is a candidate for Juris Doctor (J.D.) at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law with a special interest in private international law and ADR. She is both a Research and Teaching Assistant to Prof. Ronald A. Brand, the Academic Director of the Center for International Legal Education (CILE). She holds a dual Master of International Business Management & Innovation from Universidad Católica de Ávila (UCAV) and Barcelona Executive Business School (BEBS) in Spain. She earned her B.A. in Political Science and Sociology from Syracuse University.

Before discovering ADR, Cariana worked in Supreme Court litigation and appellate practice in Manhattan, New York as well as advocating for survivors of sexual abuse and discrimination in Pennsylvania and New York, specializing in claims brought under the Child Victims Act (CVA). Before this, she taught English throughout Italy and Switzerland. She is currently pursuing her fluency certifications in both Spanish and French.
