“Arbitration and Mediation Mastery: A Spotlight on- Stephen Smith, FCIArb”

CIArb-NAB’s Ask the Arbitrator series is proud to present an interview with International Arbitrator Stephen Smith, FCIArb, on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at 1 pm EST.

Mr. Stephen Smith is a seasoned, domestic and an international arbitrator with decades of experience serving as arbitrator/mediator, counsel, or expert witness in a wide array of arbitration cases involving commercial satellites, commercial launch services, jet engines, crypto currencies, services contracts in war zones, hardware and software licensing and development, intellectual property issues, technology transfer, and insurance recovery.

Steve is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb). He has served as arbitrator or mediator in major proceedings before the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC), the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA),the Hong Kong International Arbitration Center,  the American Arbitration Association (AAA), and the International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR), in matters involving U.S. and foreign, and civil and common laws.

Steve is also on the rosters/panels of major dispute resolution organizations in the United States and abroad. He is internationally recognized for his efforts to improve arbitration processes. While achieving outstanding results, his effective case management strategies—both as arbitrator and mediator—have also made large dispute resolutions much timelier and more cost efficient. As a leading proponent for cost and schedule efficiency he has lectured extensively on those subjects worldwide to corporate management and legal groups. Mr. Smith received his undergraduate degree in Government and Economics from Georgetown University in 1973, and his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 1977.

Ms. Cariana Jones, a Juris Doctor (J.D.) candidate at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, will interview Mr. Smith to gain insights into his professional journey. Cariana is pursuing her studies with a special interest in private international law and ADR. She is both a Research and Teaching Assistant to Prof. Ronald A. Brand, the Academic Director of the Center for International Legal Education (CILE).

Bios

Stephen Smith, Esq., FCIArb

After spending several years in private practice after Georgetown law school, Steve Smith spent nearly 30 years as in house counsel for Lockheed Martin Corporation and its predecessors. Most of that time was spent as Vice President and General Counsel of the company’s Space division. In that capacity he was responsible for leading legal teams in major arbitrations involving software, satellite launch rockets and commercial satellites before ICC, LCIA and AAA/ICDR. Since taking early retirement from LM in 2011, Steve spent about 5 years co-chairing the Arbitration practice group in a major Denver based law firm, and, since 2017 has been an independent arbitrator, mediator, and consultant, practicing before most of the world’s major arbitration institutions.

As an independent arbitrator, mediator and consultant, Steve Smith handles complex international and domestic commercial disputes. He has served as arbitrator, mediator, and expert witness in major proceedings before the world’s leading arbitration and mediation institutions and in US Federal Courts. Claims in his ADR cases have ranged from $1 million to over $200 million, and over $1 billion in cases where he has acted as counsel. Smith brings to his practice nearly three decades of in-house counsel corporate legal and senior management experience in the world’s largest aerospace and defense company, where he handled a multitude of disputes involving high technology products and services.

Steve is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb) and a member of the governing body of the American Arbitration Association/International Centre for Dispute Resolution. Cariana M. Jones

Cariana Jones is a candidate for Juris Doctor (J.D.) at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law with a special interest in private international law and ADR. She is both a Research and Teaching Assistant to Prof. Ronald A. Brand, the Academic Director of the Center for International Legal Education (CILE). She holds a dual Master of International Business Management & Innovation from Universidad Católica de Ávila (UCAV) and Barcelona Executive Business School (BEBS) in Spain. She earned her B.A. in Political Science and Sociology from Syracuse University.

Before discovering ADR, Cariana worked in Supreme Court litigation and appellate practice in Manhattan, New York as well as advocating for survivors of sexual abuse and discrimination in Pennsylvania and New York, specializing in claims brought under the Child Victims Act (CVA). Before this, she taught English throughout Italy and Switzerland. She is currently pursuing her fluency certifications in both Spanish and French.
