An Interview with Ms. Serena K. Lee, President & CEO of the International Institute for Conflict Prevention & Resolution (CPR)

CIArb NAB is thrilled to announce an exclusive interview with Serena K. Lee, President & CEO of the International Institute for Conflict Prevention & Resolution (CPR).

With nearly two decades of experience in the field, Ms. Serena Lee has been instrumental in developing the careers of arbitrators across various sectors. Having served as the Vice President at the American Arbitration Association on the West Coast, first in the Construction Division and later in the Commercial Division, and most recently as Vice President of Operations for JAMS, overseeing panels in San Francisco, Santa Rosa, and Seattle, Ms. Lee joined CPR in April 2024 as their new President & CEO. Serena brings a unique perspective on the arbitration landscape. Throughout her career, she has guided countless arbitrators, providing invaluable insights and support.

In this session, Ms. Lee will explore CPR’s distinctive role within the arbitration community and discuss how involvement with CPR and its subsidiary, CPR DRS, can significantly enhance an arbitrator’s career development. Ms. Lee will be interviewed by Mr. John Burritt McArthur, FCIArb, the head of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) Northern California branch and Member of the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals.

Mr. McArthur has 30 years of experience as an arbitrator and 41 years as a trial lawyer, representing clients in courts nationwide. A former partner at Susman Godfrey LLP and Hosie McArthur LLP, he is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and of the College of Commercial Arbitrators and serves on multiple national and international arbitration panels, including CPR, AAA, and the London Court of International Arbitration. John holds an impressive array of academic credentials, including a J.D., M.A., M.P.A., and Ph.D., and has published extensively on judicial management and energy law.

Bios

Ms. Serena K. Lee is the President and CEO of the International Institute for Conflict Prevention & Resolution (CPR), a not-for-profit think tank based in New York City created in 1977 by a group of in-house and corporate attorneys, litigators and academics to help business better resolve disputes without the acrimonious and expensive litigation process.  Prior to CPR, Serena served as the Vice President of Operations for JAMS, overseeing the resolution centers in San Francisco, Santa Rosa and Seattle. She also served for over a decade with the American Arbitration Association as the Vice President in the Construction and Commercial Divisions. Serena is an active member of a number of legal organizations including the California Lawyers Association’s Litigation ADR Committee (as Vice Chair then Chair), the ABA Section of Dispute Resolution, the Asian American Bar Association of Greater Bay Area, NAPABA, and many others. She received her J.D. from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, her mediation certification through the Kukin Program for Conflict Resolution and is a licensed member of the New York State Bar. Mr. John Burritt McArthur has been a trial lawyer since 1983 and an arbitrator since 1994. He was one of the first lawyers at Houston’s Susman Godfrey LLP, where he practiced from 1983 to 1992. He has been honored by many trial-lawyer honorary groups. He has focused his efforts on arbitration since the early 2010s and has arbitrated over 125 arbitrations through award. Listed by AAA, CPR, Fed-Arb, and FINRA, he is a Fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (whose Northern California branch he heads) and a Member of the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals. His most recent of many publications is THE REASONED ARBITRATION AWARD IN THE UNITED STATES: ITS PROMISE, PROBLEMS, PREPARATION, AND PRESERVATION (Juris Publications October 2022).
