The North American Branch (NAB) invites you to join us on 22 March 2021 at 11 am ET to learn about how Judge Shira Scheindlin, Ms. Blanca del Carmen Martinez Mendoza, and Ms. Deborah Hylton provide Parties the procedures they need to reach an enforceable award.

Judge Shira Scheindlin will address case management techniques to decrease cost and increase effectiveness of the arbitral process. Ms. Carmen Martinez Mendoza and Ms. Deborah Hylton will address elements of an effective expedited proceeding and the implicit tradeoffs involved in expedited proceedings.

Hon. Shira A. Scheindlin, is a retired United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, where she served for 22 years. Before taking her seat on the Southern District, Judge Scheindlin worked as a prosecutor, commercial lawyer, and judge. In the mid-70s Judge Scheindlin served as Chief Administrative United States Attorney and Deputy Chief of the Economic Crimes Unit in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York. She left to become the general counsel of the Department of Investigations of the City of New York. She then returned to the Eastern District as a Magistrate Judge for five years, followed by eight years in practice as a partner at two large New York City law firms, representing clients in both commercial litigation and products liability, in both state and federal court.

Ms. Blanca Martinez, ACIArb specializes in international arbitration, international trade law, public international law, as well as Mexican constitutional and administrative law. She is a lawyer at the National Agency for Safety, Energy and Environment. Her experience includes investment arbitrations representing Mexico as well as participating in the negotiation processes of international agreements as a former member of the Legal Counsel Office at the Ministry of Economy in Mexico. Her practice has also been focused on domestic administrative and constitutional proceedings and tax law. Blanca is also a lecturer at the National University of Mexico (UNAM).

Ms. Deborah Hylton, FCIArb is an experienced arbitrator, mediator and conflict engagement specialist with practical business experience, legal skills and financial acumen. She is also has served as transactional lawyer, CEO, board chair, board member, restructuring officer and corporate governance expert. She is a problem-solver by nature and practice. Her background offers a distinctive skill set in the traditional roles of arbitrator and mediator and in the growing field of dispute prevention and early conflict engagement.

MODERATOR :Dr. Katherine Simpson, FCIArb is an international arbitrator based in the U.K. (33 Bedford Row Chambers) and the U.S. (Simpson Dispute Resolution). She is an educator who lectures frequently on topics related to international arbitration and advocacy, and her international efforts to increase diversity in international dispute resolution include “The New List: Arbitrators of African Descent with a U.S. Nexus” (with Nancy M. Thevenin) and “CETA – Where are the Women?”, which was shortlisted for GAR’s “Equal Representation in Arbitration Pledge”-Award (2020).
