CIArb-NAB’s monthly webinar series “Ask the Arbitrator” presents an interview with Arbitrator, Mr. Gary Benton on Wednesday, January 11, 2023, at 12:00 p.m. EDT/9:00 a.m. PDT. Mr. Benton will be interviewed by Ms. Anqi Luan, an LL.M student with the White & Case International Arbitration program at the University of Miami, School of Law, Florida. Ms. Luan is a member of CIArb-NAB (See bios below).
The Ask the Arbitrator series features hour-long sessions of light-hearted conversations with seasoned international arbitrators, each month, that are not only fun, but also substantive, with a focus on how to break into the field of international arbitration, or how to best position oneself to get the arbitration work in the international arena. The monthly series is intended to promote the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and its members, as well as the participating student community.
The series provides the ADR community with content that speaks to the practical skills and strategies employed by skilled Arbitrators and Mediators. The interviews delve into topics of interest to arbitrators, educators/ law students, and generally include a moderated question and answer session.
Biographies:
Gary L. Benton, C.Arb
Gary Benton is an internationally recognized Arbitrator with expertise in US and international business, corporate investment, technology, and emerging growth matters. He regularly handles matters involving technology development, distribution, licensing, infringement, cryptocurrency, cybersecurity, and corporate governance disputes. He has handled matters in over 80 countries and serves on the panels of the leading international arbitral institutions in the US, Europe, and Asia.
Gary is a Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) Chartered Arbitrator, Fellow, and member of the CIArb North American Branch. He is also a Fellow and serves on the Executive Committee of the College of Commercial Arbitrators (CCA) and is an Academy Member of the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals (NADN). In addition to his arbitration practice, Gary is an Adjunct Professor at Santa Clara University. He is the founder and current Chairman of the Silicon Valley Arbitration and Mediation Center (SVAMC) and the founder and President of California Arbitration (CalArb.org). He was previously a partner with the international law firms Pillsbury Winthrop LLP and Coudert Brothers LLP. Gary is qualified as a US lawyer and an English solicitor. www.garybentonarbitration.com
Anqi Luan
Anqi Luan is an LL.M. in international arbitration candidate at the University of Miami School of Law. She is pursuing studies related to international arbitration, Intellectual property, and international dispute resolution. During the past summer, she worked in an international law firm’s trial team in Miami. Ms. Anqi has been participating as a Senator in the Student Bar Association for the past two consecutive years.
Before joining Miami Law, Anqi worked and lived in Hong Kong specializing in Mediation. She has an LL.M degree from The Pennsylvania State University, Penn State Law, PA, and a degree in Master of Laws in Administrative Law from the South China University of Technology, School of Law & School of Intellectual Property, Guangzhou, China. Ms. Anqi speaks Chinese and English.
