Young Members Group of CIArb NAB, presents webinar, “Clean Energy and International Commercial Arbitration”, on Thursday, April 22, 2021 @ 12 p.m. ET/ 9:00 a.m. PST. The webinar, the first in a three-part series of webinars on Climate Change, Decarbonization, and International Dispute Resolution will explore the clean energy transition in the US and globally, its centrality to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050, and the international commercial arbitration disputes relating to the same.

Introduced by Mr. Paul Barker and moderated by Mr. Carlos E. Martinez-Betanzos, the panelists Ms. Cecilia Azar, Mr. Adam Bryan, Mr. Christophe Lobier, and Ms. Regina Madrid (see panelist bios below), will consider the impact of renewable energy technologies such as solar, wind, and hydro, as well as new lower-carbon sources such as hydrogen and biofuels and discuss the practical and procedural aspects in regard to clean energy-related disputes, including the appointment of arbitrators and experts with relevant expertise.  The panel will also consider how the physical and transition risks of climate change, and issues pertaining to climate change law and policy, are becoming increasingly relevant to international commercial arbitrations generally.

Panelist Bios:

Cecilia Azar is a partner at Galicia in Mexico City, where her practice focuses on complex domestic and international commercial disputes. She acts as arbitrator, counsel, mediator or expert.  Cecilia is recommended as a leading arbitration lawyer by Who’s Who Legal, Chambers & Partners, and Legal 500.  

Adam Bryan is Senior Legal Counsel in the trading division of the Total energy group, based in Switzerland.  Previously, he worked for approximately ten years in international arbitration in London (Cleary Gottlieb), Paris (Three Crowns), Hong Kong (Allen and Overy) and Geneva (LALIVE).  

Christophe Lobier is Senior Litigation Counsel for GE Renewable Energy, based in Paris, France.  He joined GE in 2017 after ten years in private practice with a focus on international arbitration.  Christophe is a member of the New York Bar, and a former member of the Paris Bar. 

Regina Madrid is in-house counsel at JinkoSolar in San Francisco.  Before joining JinkoSolar, she worked for nine years as a corporate and transactional associate at Clifford Chance and Simpson Thatcher in New York and at Creel, García-Cuellar, Aiza y Enríquez in Mexico City.  Regina is qualified in New York and Mexico.  

Moderator Bios:

Mr. Paul Barker is a barrister and arbitrator in independent practice at Doughty Street Chambers in London and a Research Fellow at Stanford Law School’s Gould Center in Silicon Valley, where he focuses on climate change and renewable energy investment.  Paul is recognized as a leading arbitration lawyer by Who’s Who Legal. 

Mr. Carlos E. Martinez-Betanzos is Counsel in the Mexico City office of Creel, García-Cuéllar, Aiza y Enríquez, S.C.  His practice focuses on commercial and investor-state arbitrations, and other types of alternative dispute resolution.  Carlos is listed in the arbitration rankings of Legal 500, Who’s Who Legal and other publications.
